Set of (2) Vintage Brown & Dark Brown Ceramic Stoneware French Covered Casserole | Hors Serie By SIAL Pottery Quebec | SIAL II Oval Service
This set of two (2) vintage Sial brown ceramic casserole dishes with lid from the 70's is so lovely!
This Quebec manufacturer of stoneware dishes was born in the 1970s in Laval, Quebec. After only a few years of operation, it closed its doors in 1981. The production was mainly very elegant and minimalist stoneware - often associated with the Danish design movement. The potters were Pierre Legault, Gaétan Beaudin and Maurice Savoie.
This was the most extensive design produced by SIAL II. Daniel Congé describes the set as:
"Dinnerware designed by Gaétan Beaudin from the intersection of two ovals. The pieces have a two-tone orange-brown glaze produced by salt spray, to which is added a choice of four complementary shades: white, brown Tenmoku, celadon green and gray, reminiscent of Beaudin's stay in Japan. Pressed or molded with a new ceramic paste made of porcelain 75% and 25% clay, the parts of the service need only one baking period of twenty-four hours at a temperature of 2400 degrees Fahrenheit."
These pieces are in good condition! There are some signs of use, as expected for a piece of that age (see photos). There is a small chip on one (1) of the casseroles and there is a crack inside of the handles (from the original production).
They are marked “Hors Serie Sial Made in Canada” at the bottom.
These beautiful casserole dishes will be a great addition to your vintage boho kitchenware collection!
